Although one of the most popular surgical procedures, rhinoplasty remains one of the most complex. This is due to the need to balance and harmonize the shape of the nose with the rest of the patient's facial features. Rhinoplasty is not just about changing the size or shape of the nose; it involves a deep understanding of the individual facial aesthetics.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure mainly aimed at improving the appearance of the nose. It can correct birth deformities as well as deformities acquired during nose development or as a result of previous trauma or surgery.

Rhinoplasty is usually performed in conjunction with septoplasty, a surgery to correct a deviated septum to improve breathing. The nasal septum, located between the two nostrils, is essential for proper airflow and efficient breathing. A deviated septum can cause shortness of breath and contribute to other health problems such as sleep apnea or sinus infections.

The secret to a successful rhinoplasty

As you can see from the photos, Dr. Porumb creates a unique nose tailored to each individual patient, taking into account the particular facial features. The result is spectacular, with a natural nose without the signs of an 'operated nose' or a 'standard nose'.

When is Rhinoplasty recommended?

Rhinoplasty is recommended for people who fall into one or more of the following situations:

1. Functional Breathing Problems: If your nostrils stick or close when you take a deep breath in.

2. Deviație de Sept și dificultăți de respirație

3. The nose is fully developed: It is important for the patient to have a fully developed nose, which usually happens from the age of 14-15 years.

4. Aesthetic dissatisfaction: If you are dissatisfied with the shape, size or structure of your nose.

5. Facial Trauma: People who have suffered trauma to the nose resulting in nose deformities.

6. Congenital Defects: Birth defects affecting the structure of the nose can be corrected by rhinoplasty.

7. Nasal hump: The hump that deforms the profile of the nose can be surgically reduced by rhinoplasty.

8. Nose on one side/deviated: A nose that is visibly deviated or tilted to one side can be corrected to achieve a more symmetrical appearance.

9. Nostril Blocked by a Deviated Septum: If a deviated septum partially or completely blocks a nostril and impedes breathing, rhinoplasty can help open the airway.

10. Specific Aspects of the Tip of the Nose: If the tip of the nose is drooping, too broad or domed, rhinoplasty can reshape this area for a more harmonious appearance.

11. Nostril or Nose Size: Overly large nostrils or a nose that is disproportionate to the rest of the face can be resized for better aesthetic balance.

What risks can occur after rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure whose risks, to some extent, are specific to surgery and to some extent are not.

What does this mean?

As a surgical procedure, rhinoplasty carries a risk of infection and bleeding. In order to reduce this risk, you will receive detailed instructions both before and after the operation, as well as appropriate treatment with antibiotics. All possible complications will be fully discussed during your pre-operative consultation.

In the case of rhinoplasty, the most unusual risk may be your satisfaction with the result after surgery. That's why a personalized consultation before the procedure is essential to clarify the realistic expectations you may have following the procedure. To this end, we use computer simulations to support you in making the right decision for you.

We at Estetis Clinic strive to keep risks to a minimum. Proof of this are the remarkable results we have achieved, the positive reviews of previously operated patients, as well as the patients who come to Romania especially to see Dr. Porumb from all over the world: Western Europe, the United States, Asia and Australia. The trust we inspire and the international recognition we receive underlines our commitment to excellence and motivates us to be and remain leaders in the field of rhinoplasty.

What is the healing process after rhinoplasty?

The healing process involves several stages, which means that the final result is only visible after a varying period of time, ranging from a few months to a year.

Here are the stages of healing to help you understand why the results of a rhinoplasty don't show right away:

  • Inflammation and Bruising: Immediately after surgery, swelling and bruising is normal. These symptoms begin to subside significantly after the first 10 days.
  • Inflammation Reduction: This is the body's natural response to surgery. The reduction of inflammation is a gradual process that allows the new nasal structures to reach their final shape.
  • Scar Tissue Maturation: Scar formation is a natural process that takes time to allow the skin and nasal structures to adapt to their new configuration.
  • Adapting to New Structures: If significant changes have been made to the nasal structure, such as removing or adding cartilage, these must integrate and stabilize properly.
  • Individual Specifics: Each person has their own healing rate, influenced by age, health, and other factors. Some patients may see results more quickly, while others may require a longer period of time.

To correctly evaluate the final result of a rhinoplasty, it is important to allow sufficient time for the healing process.

What to expect after Rhinoplasty?

Stuffy nose – Normally, after rhinoplasty, the nose may be stuffy due to postoperative edema (swelling), which occurs both on the outside and inside of the nose. However, in the case of rhinoplasty performed at Estetis Clinic by Dr. Șerban Porumb, patients do not face this situation, because we use silicone splints, and patients can breathe through their nose immediately after the procedure.

Secretions – Normally, the nose secretes about 230 ml of mucus per day, which drains into the throat without you being aware of it. After the nose surgery, due to the feeling of blockage, you may become aware of this normal secretion. You should not worry. The combination of normal mucus drainage and edema inside the nose can cause the drainage to be through the nostrils, not the throat.

Headaches – Headaches are common after general anesthesia and surgery. You will need to take painkillers prescribed by your doctor, and if necessary, you may also be prescribed medication to help you sleep.

Strange or unpleasant odors – A few weeks after the procedure, you may notice a strange or unpleasant smell in your nose, caused by mucus buildup. This is due to the reduced mobility of the nasal mucosa. During this period, you can clean the nasal mucosa with saline.

Bruises and swelling – De obicei, umflăturile și vânătăile ating maximul la două zile după operație. Vestea bună este că la o săptămână după operație, când se îndepărtează atela, acestea vor fi mult diminuate, permițându-ți să-ți reiei viața socială.

Weaker smell – During the first week, when you have the splints fixed to your nose, it is normal for your sense of smell to be weaker. It will return after the splints are removed, as will your sense of taste, as there is a connection between the two senses.

Swollen or numb upper lip – If your upper lip swells a little and feels numb, it is nothing serious, it is a normal reaction after septoplasty. These symptoms are common and will gradually disappear in about 2-3 weeks after the procedure.
